Tragopogon species-nova
This species was collected in Moscow Idaho in 2012. The flower heads are very large (3\" diameter) and most uniquely it has slender rhizomes (all other Tragopogon species in North America are tap rooted biennials). Moscow is only eight miles from Pullman, WA where Dr. Marion Ownbey conducted extensive well published research on the genus Tragopogon. As a result of introductions for that research, there are species and hybrids that occur in the area that are found nowhere else in North America. This may be a species that he introduced, or yet another hybrid (it does not appear to produce fertile seed). To date, it remains unidentified. Asteraceae = Compositae > The sunflower family.
